Urban realist genre

Urban realist films is a genre of film that is based on real life issues within the modern teenage culture.Locations are mainly set in inner cities, exploring themes of violence, friendship and family life. Teenagers in this particular genre are normally portreyed as disadvantage, belonging to working class families, and spending most of their time on the streets. Imagery such as weapons, hoodies and cars are constantly used throughout the film.

An example of an Urban realist film is bullet boy

Set in East London, Ricky- A young black man fresh out of a young offenders institute is introduced to us. Though determined to go straight, Ricky doesn’t even make it home before he’s in trouble again, thanks to his best friend Wisdom and a confrontation with a local rude boy that leads to a series of escalating incidents.

Meanwhile, Ricky’s 12 year old brother Curtis hero-worships his older brother, while determined not to follow in his footsteps. However, after a particularly unwise trawl through his brother’s possessions, he soon finds himself in trouble of his own. As things start to build up, Ricky comes to terms that he is to leave his neighbourhood and as he does, its too late.
